Diwali Themed Fundraiser

For many of the stylists at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence it was a life changing moment when they first learnt to work with hair, but for groups of young people in India the experience has been even more transformative. In November, Schwarzkopf Professional began a new global social initiative to introduce disadvantaged youth to the craft, livelihood potential and joy of hairdressing.

Education has always been key here at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence and this program is centered on the belief that education and knowledge provide the best opportunity for a secure future. We are therefore delighted to be a part of this initiative and will be working hard to raise funds for Janet to spend time in India in 2012, training and mentoring young people in SOS villages.

The fundraising efforts started with a fantastic Diwali themed pamper evening at the Gilesgate salon. The salon was adorned with Diwali lamps and relaxing incense to celebrate the Hindu Festival of Lights. Staff were dressed for the occasion in beautiful Sari’s and clients were treat to a relaxing hair treatment, scalp massage and blow dry for a donation towards the cause. The night was a great success and raised £500 - a great start to the fundraising!!

Fundraising for Lesotho.

After months of hard work, preparation and fundraising, part-time worker Laura headed for Lesotho in July 2011. With the help of the staff and clients through pamper evenings, we managed to raise over £500 to help Laura in her fundraising for the visit.

During her time there, Laura was working with orphans and helping child headed families. She educated young adults about the risk of HIV and AIDS and helped to decorate a school and care for the children.

Hats, tops, trousers, shoes and toys were all donated to the orphanages and children. The children were very grateful for these kind gifts and thoroughly enjoyed Laura’s company. A massive thank you to all who donated money or gifts!!!

Re-Cycling For Rover - February 2011

Many Thanks to our clients & friends for the blankets, dog beds, leaders Etc. for stray animals in County Durham. The donations were dropped of with another cheque bringing the total donated so far to £1150.00. Durham City MP Roberta Blackman-Woods came along to see the charity's work in action and praised the efforts of the clients and staff in helping this deserving local charity.

Stray Aid - May 2010

The team comprises many pet lovers who're aware that in the current economic climate record numbers of dogs are being abandoned or given to rescue centres because their owners can no longer afford to care for them. The stray aid sanctuary established by a vetinarian friend of Janet's is the latest to benefit from a laid-back Sunday sponsored walk undertaken by volunteers from the team, their friends, family and four legged companions. The stroll along the scenic route from the salon to Durham cathedral raised over £1000 and was a good-natured bonding exercise.

In their efforts to regularly 'recycle for Rover', the team sends stacks of their unwanted bedding, towels and blankets to Stray Aid, a commitment that the clients have picked up on, with the salon becoming a drop off point for donated goods for the refuge's charity shop. The collective generorsity of everyone associated with Janet Maitland Hair Excellence and the frequency of their donations has had a really positive impact on Stray Aid's Fortunes.

Durham Young Carers

The stylists at Janet Maitland Hair Excellence thoroughly enjoy their evenings with the Durham young carers. The young people visit the salon for a well deserved pamper night and leave with cool hair cuts and goodie bags of products.

Durham Trinity School

The team recently enjoyed a trip to Trinity school where they met the pupils and treated them to a make-over and a talk about the hairdressing industry. The pupils certainly enjoyed their experience but I bet not as much as our team enjoyed meeting all the young people.

Supporting women in the community

The salons regularly donate slow moving haircare products to local Women's Refuge centres. This provides many women with a little bit of luxury at a very low point in their lives.

Beating Poverty

We are curently raising funds through auctions and pamper days to fund one of our part-time helpers - Laura to visit Lesotho in July 2011. She will be working in an orphanage and helping educate young adults in the risk of HIV.

Together we have raised over £2000 pounds for our well building scheme for the orphans of aids in Lesotho Africa, the money raised was enough to pay for one well and start building two others. The money that was left was used to help two schools and a clinic desperatelty in need of a regular and reliable water supply.
